Carter is making AWIS and AWIS friends a very special offer that includes a photo shoot at his professional photography studio, use of a digital online selection gallery, and one final fully edited headshot.
Date: Wednesday, June 15th, 6:00 PM
Location: Studio 1200, 245 W 29th St, New York, NY
Fee: $150.00 (5~9 people sign up) If you bring friends and men, price will go down by $25~50 per person.
Online payment in advance is required. Please RSVP on our Meetup page
For those sign up for makeup service at the event in advance (by responding to a question at the end of RSVP), we will divide up the cost by number of people. This will be separately charged via this site after the current RSVP closes.

Negotiating as Women in Science: The Art/Strategy of Win-Win
Tuesday, April 12th at 6:30 PM
The MetroNY Chapter of AWIS and NYU Women in Science are cosponsoring an event focusing on specific tools to help us negotiate as women in science. This is a free event open to all! Space is limited, so we ask that you reserve your spot with an RSVP on our Meetup Page.
Negotiating skills are especially important for women in science and are essential in areas such as negotiating parameters of a postdoc position and negotiating salary and start-up packages (including space) for junior faculty. They are also critical for entrepreneurial faculty when licensing their intellectual property or spinning off a start-up company. Understanding how and when to employ these skills at various points throughout one’s career can significantly affect the level of professional and financial success women scientists can achieve.
In this presentation, Dr. Gillian Small, Vice Chancellor of Research, CUNY will discuss these topics in detail and provide advice and references.
There will also be the opportunity to network with fellow scientists in NYC! Light refreshments will be served.
Dr. Gillian Small joined CUNY in 2001 and served as University Dean for Research from 2003-2008 before being appointed the Vice Chancellor of Research. She has been responsible for establishing many new research institutes at CUNY, as well as the first postdoctoral program for postdoctoral fellows across the University and the Technology Commercialization office. In addition, she has conducted numerous panels and talks on negotiation and has many tips and wisdom to impart on young female scientists at the start of their careers. Dr. Small serves on the governing boards of the Association for Women in Science, The Science Coalition, the World Science Festival, and the New York Structural Biology Center, among others.

Conflict Resolution Skills: In and Outside the Lab - One Day Workshop
October 26th, 2014, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, NYAS
Success at work, both in and outside of academia, requires us to collaborate well with other people. Conflict is inevitable and we are routinely called upon to resolve difficult conversations. Due to the nature of their work, academic researchers often have highly developed intellectual and analytical capabilities while struggling with communication and conflict resolution skills in the lab.
In this weekend workshop you will learn critical skills and tools to cultivate more fulfilling and productive working relationships. Through exercises and role plays using your own examples, you will get a chance to practice these skills and receive direct feedback from the facilitators and fellow participants. You will learn how to transform difficult conversations into productive ones and practice effective strategies for resolving conflict.
The acquired skills will set you up for greater success and more fulfillment in your current lab work. And for those planning to transition into non-academic careers it will provide you with critical skills to thrive in the for-profit world.
In order to participate in this workshop, there is mandatory pre-work which should take no longer than 30 minutes. We will send this assignment after you register for the event.
This event is being hosted by the New York Academy of Sciences. For those who are not members of NYAS but are members of AWIS, please email [email protected] to receive a member discount code.

She is currently a product development scientist in BASF’s Care Chemicals division where she is responsible for the development of new technologies for hair care. Such technologies include materials that offer key consumer benefits and test methods for the evaluation of product performance. Prior to joining BASF, Dr. Evans earned her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences with an emphasis on Cosmetic Science from University of Cincinnati in 2011. Her dissertation work focused on investigating the factors that influence the uptake of water hardness metals by human hair, the impact of that uptake on hair properties and technologies related to controlling this interaction. Dr. Evans has also completed multiple internships in the Beauty Technology Division of The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) where she worked on projects ranging from upstream research for hair colorant technologies to clinical testing for shaving irritation. She earned her B.S. in Chemistry from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University in 2005.
Dulce Almario has over 15 years of experience in the Cosmetic Personal Care Industry. She started her
career at L'Oreal, Redken as an R&D chemist. After L'Oreal, she joined Firmenich Inc, a global top fragrance and flavor company, as an Application Lab chemist and then transitioned to the role of an Innovation Manager in their Creative Marketing Studio. While at Firmenich, she worked in their Geneva & Paris location for a short period of time as part of the company’s exchange program. She is currently the Associate Vice President of Product & Fragrance Innovation at Victoria's Secret Beauty, where she is responsible for overseeing the day to day business for all their beauty categories. She earned her undergraduate Degree in Chemistry from Rutgers University & a Master’s in Professional Studies, Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing and Management from the Fashion Institute of Technology.
The panel moderator, Amanda Weyerbacher, previously worked as in Senior Scientist in the Product safety department at L’Oreal. In this role, she managed the clinical safety testing program of multiple consumer products across a wide array of global brands for market launch, ensuring compliance with international regulatory requirements and claim substantiation. Prior to
this position, Dr. Weyerbacher earned her Ph.D. in Pharmacology at Cornell University’s - Weill Cornell Graduate School of Biological Sciences in New York City in May 2009. In her dissertation research, she identified critical pain signaling proteins, cytokines and immune/
central nervous system interactions as relevant drug targets for clinical pain control in an animal model of persistent pain. From 2001-2003, Dr. Weyerbacher was a Clinical Research Associate at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In this role, she managed up to ten active Phase I and II clinical trials, defining and monitoring project scope, timelines and deliverables from project initiation to close-out. She earned her B.A. in Biology-Chemistry from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY in May 2001.

About the speakers:
Marianne Mota Paulino started her career with L’Oreal USA in 2009 as a formulation chemist of hair styling products. In 2012, she transferred to her current role in the pilot team where she is in charge of developing efficient processes for the hair category. As a Sr. Process Engineer, she also ensures technology scale-up and the successful manufacturing of new product launches. Prior to this position, she earned her M.S. in Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, where she studied the release of PEGylated proteins from PLG microspheres. She also worked as an intern in 3M and Procter and Gamble (P&G), where she had the opportunity to work on the development of new industrial adhesives and consumer studies for sanitary napkins, respectively. She obtained her dual B.S. in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering from University of Florida in 2006.
Amber Evans started her career in the personal care industry with BASF – The Chemical Company in late 2012.
